Dickey Betts & Great Southern - Freebird Cafe - 4/4/2003

My first live rock (concert) show was Nov.2, '68 - James Gang and Steppenwolf. I've been to hundreds of shows since and have seen just about everyone except the Beatles and Hendrix, but last night at the Freebird Cafe was simply the most awesome show I have ever seen! I caught Dickey & Great Southern 3 times last year and they were great, but last night was a religious experience!! Dickey Betts is the not only the best American guitar player....last night in Jacksonville Dickey Betts showed he is the best guitar player in the world!!! Dickey, Dan and the band, cook good... real good!

I saw Dickey Betts for the first time last weekend at Freebirds in Jacksonville. What did I think of the show? It was fantastic! As a first-timer what struck me was the musicianship. I can’t compare that night to any other show they’ve done, but I can hold it against all the groups who play the same stuff all night, and I can tell you there is no comparison. It was a treat to hear such variety in styles and influences. I was impressed not only with the range of their playing, but also with the proficiency and spirit they put into all of it. It’s one thing for a group to throw in some spice, but it’s another to be able to light a fire under it. I hope you long time fans can still see that, and don’t take it for granted. You’re lucky that this group hasn’t settled into a few things they do well, or comfortably, just to get by. Although I’m not familiar with Dickey’s recordings I heard a lot of bits I recognized. His interpretation of styles and influences he picked up from others came through, and I recognized him as the source of influence on artists I enjoy. He reminded me of old Jazz and Blues discs I used to enjoy, and he inspired me to find them and give them another spin. That’s the biggest complement I can give a musician – he made me want to seek out more music. I thoroughly enjoyed my Dickey Betts evening, and I’m looking forward to my next opportunity to see him again, or hear more of his live work.
